The application process involves sending data regarding our increase in population, crime rate and calls for service. The Justice Department reviews and scrutinizes this information. A decision to award the funding is then made based upon our statistics that determines if additional police officers are needed and necessary. Danville met the criteria.
This grant is the COPS Universal Hiring Program. The grant is used to fund the salary, benefits package and training of an additional full-time Police Officer over a three year period. The government will pay seventy-five (75%) of the cost and the Town of Danville will pay for twenty-five (25%) of the same over a period of three years. At the end of third year, the Town of Danville will retain the officer. This will be Danville's second full-time officer.
The Towns surrounding Danville currently staff as many as five full-time officers. These towns also provide twenty-four hour patrol coverage. Danville does not typically have an officer on patrol after midnight and in fact, is one a few departments still utilizing "call time". If there is an emergency call in the middle of the night, our officers are notified by Rockingham Dispatch by phone. They must respond from their residence and critical time can be lost.
We also received a Federal Block Grant through the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office in the amount of $9,000.00 (nine thousand dollars). These funds will be used to purchase and implement new computer software and hardware. This computer system will mirror those being used by Rockingham Dispatch and many other agencies throughout the State.
Earlier this year we received two federal grants from the New Hampshire Highway Safety Agency for Selective Enforcement and D.W.I. Patrols. Each grant provided $1,147.20 (one thousand one hundred forty seven dollars and twenty cents) to fund additional patrol shifts. These patrols were used strictly for concentrating on special motor vehicle violations and apprehending motorists driving while intoxicated.
It has been an exciting year for the Police Department. More information about the grants will be presented during the budgeting process this fall.
