Beware of "Grandson in Jail Scam"

On January 24, 2011, an elderly woman reported that she was almost scammed out of five thousand dollars by a man posing to be her grandson. The woman said she received a call from a man who claimed to be her grandson who told her he had been arrested for getting into a motor vehicle accident that caused property damage.  The caller went on to say that he was the designated driver for some of his friends who had been drinking.  Although he was not arrested for DWI, he was taken into custody because he had caused damage to the property of another.  The caller said he needed $5,000 to get bailed out of jail, which reportedly would cover restitution and attorney fees.  The woman reported that she had not talked with her grandson for quite sometime but she had no reason to believe it was not really him.

After getting the call, the woman went to her bank and withdrew $5,000, and then proceeded to Walmart to wire the money by way of a Moneygram as the caller instructed.  While on her way, she recalled the earlier conversation and the man referring to her as “Grandma”.  The woman said that all of her grandchildren called her “Grammy” and she grew suspicious.  She at that time returned home and called her grandson’s wife to learn that her grandson was actually at work and was not in any type of trouble.  Fortunately, no funds were actually wired.

The police department has received similar reports of this type of scam and the problem is widespread.  The caller in this instance was calling from 438-321-6638, which is a telephone number based in Canada and apparently where this scam originates.

Please always verify unsolicited transactions of any kind before acting on them and never provide any personal information.  Should you receive a similar call, please report it to the police department

Danville Police Noting Dramatic Increase In DWI Arrests

Through the first half of 2009, the Danville Police Department has noted a considerable increase in the number of DWI arrests over previous years.  In fact, it will undoubtedly be a record setting year for the department.  Corporal Jason Pond and Officer Sean St. Onge, who primarily cover the evening and overnight shifts, have an uncanny ability to locate offenders and have accounted for 87% of this years DWI arrests.  While offenders are facing stiffer penalties imposed by the court, it appears to be having little affect on whether or not some impaired drivers choose to get behind the wheel.  Many simply do not weigh the consequences of driving while intoxicated.  In addition to the tremendous public safety concerns drunk drivers present, the financial consequences to those convicted of DWI can be staggering.

The current minimum penalties for DWI first offence are:

The penalties for aggravated DWI or subsequent offences are considerably greater.  Offenders may also be subject to substantial attorney fees as well as enormous insurance rate increases.

Chief Parsons Recognized During National Victims Rights Week

The 10th Annual Victim's Rights Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 to recognize and honor representatives from local law enforcement and the criminal justice system for their work in supporting and providing assistance to the victims of crime.

Each year in April, the Rockingham County Attorney's office observes National Crime Victims' Rights Week, which takes place this year from April 26-May 2.

The ceremony, which was held at the Rockingham County Superior Courthouse, also commemorated the 25th anniversary of The Victims of Crime Act.

Chief Parsons was recognized for his exemplary service and dedication to the residents of Danville and to one of the most vulnerable victims of crimes — animals.

Jill Cook, Assistant County Attorney and Plaistow District Court Regional Prosecutor, presented the award to Chief Parsons, who said receiving the award was a "very humbling" experience.

"You're never expecting anything in return for your duties," the chief said, "so it's nice to be recognized by your peers on behalf of the work done to those you serve."

Pictured below with Chief Parsons from left to right are April Aucoin (Plaistow District Court Victim/Witness Advocate), Jill Cook (Assistant County Attorney), and Paula Quigley (Legal Assistant).

Bicycle Safety Update

A new law was passed this year that requires people under the age of 16 to wear a helmet while operating a bicycle on a public way.   RSA 265:144, X states:

No person less than 16 years of age may operate or ride upon a bicycle on a public way unless he or she wears protective headgear of a type approved by the commissioner of health and human services.

This is a violation and subject to a fine.

The police department would like to remind everyone that wearing a helmet while riding your bike makes good sense and could save your life.  This law has been on the books for awhile now but not every parent is aware that it exists.  The police department will be stopping people and giving them a friendly reminder, that if they are under 16, to please wear a helmet while riding on the roads of Danville.  Please be safe and happy biking!

Officer Receives Promotion

January 2006:  It gives me great pleasure to announce the following  promotion:

Ryan Furman – From Officer to Sergeant
Officer Furman has been a member of the department since December of 2000.  He is a graduate of New Hampshire’s 132nd FT Police Academy and notably was the first graduate from the academy wearing a Danville patch.  He clearly understands the department’s mission and values, and he is aware of how his work integrates with and advances the goals of the department.  His commitment and dedication to the department make him an excellent choice for the position of Sergeant and a role model for those seeking to understand the department’s values and how they impact the day-to-day operations.

Congratulations to officer Furman on his well-deserved promotion.

Scooter Ordinance Approved By Selectmen

October 13, 2004:  At their regularly scheduled meeting, the Selectmen approved the 'Motorized Skateboards, Scooters, Mini-Bikes, and Bicycles Ordinance' banning their use on town owned roads and property.

Danville Police Association

June 2004:  Police Officers from the Danville Police Department have formed a non-profit association, called the Danville Patrolmen's Association.   This non-profit association will help fund various projects within the department as well as community projects throughout Danville.

It is the goal of the Association to help minimize the tax burden by accepting donations and raising funds to offset expenditures within the police department.  The Association is looking forward to working with residents on other special projects that will benefit the Danville Community as well.

If you would like to donate to the Association you may do so by sending your tax-deductible contribution to: The Danville Patrolmen's Association, PO BOX 443, Danville, NH 03819.

The "Wall of Fame" Pays Homage to Danville Police Officers.

November 2001:  If a picture is worth a thousand words then the photos that grace the hallway at the Danville Police Department have quite a story to tell.  After months of research, Lt. Leo Beauchamp brought his idea to life by compiling nearly 30 photos that pays homage to past Danville Police Officers.  Many of the photos capture former Police Chiefs in historical settings.  One such photo of Police Chief Chester Kimball dates back to 1942.  There are also several photos of dignitaries including Bob and Elizabeth Dole taken in 1972 and a more recent autographed photo from Dennis Franz of NYPD Blue to Chief Wade Parsons who Dennis remarks shares an amazing resemblance to himself.

"There have been many dedicated people over the years who have unselfishly contributed to the success of the department" said Police Chief Wade H. Parsons.  "While it's important to stay focused on the future of the department, we should never lose sight of where we've been or forget those who gave so much."  The "Wall of Fame" should serve as a good reminder.

Chief Parsons Throws Out First Pitch At Nashua Pride Game.

On Thursday June 5, 2003, Holman Stadium played host to "Danville Night".  Danville residents received reduced admission as the Nashua Pride took on the Atlantic City Surf.  Police Chief Wade H Parsons was asked to throw out the first pitch.  Butch Hobson, a familiar face of Boston Red Sox fame and now Manager of the Pride, signed autographs and mingled with some of the fans prior to the start of the game.

A terrific time was had by all as the Pride prevailed over the Surf by a score of 3 to 1.

Black Bear spotted in N. Danville.

On Monday, October 8, 2001, a Black Bear was spotted in North Danville helping himself to some food from a bird feeder.  He has reportedly been in the area for the past few months.  Although he appears quite docile in nature, under no circumstances should anyone try to feed him or approach him.  Watch from a window -- he'll mosey along in due time.

Please contact the Animal Control Department at 382-9403 (ext.5) if you have any specific questions regarding bear safety or what you should or shouldn't do if he happens to pay you a visit.
