Nothing can be any more traumatic and frustrating as being involved in an automobile accident. The Danville Police understand the emotions inherent with being involved in an accident, and seek to assist you through this unfortunate experience.
All accidents which involve personal injury, combined damage in excess of $1,000.00, or an illegally parked motor vehicle, require the operators of any motor vehicle involved to provide any other motor vehicle operator or property owner involved with their name; address; license number; vehicle registration number; and the names of any and all passengers in their vehicle. Those that fail to do so are committing a misdemeanor offense.
Generally, the officers of the Danville Police Department will respond and collect that information for you, provide you with a copy of their initial report at the scene, and assist you in obtaining a tow truck (if needed) or getting you transportation from the scene. If you are injured in a collision it is extremely important that you contact the Police for assistance.
Once an officer has collected the information, his report will be filed with the Department of Safety. This will suffice for reporting purposes, and does not require the operators of the vehicles involved to report it to the Department of Safety. All parties involved should immediately contact their respective insurance carriers.
For those accidents where the damage is less than $1,000.00 and there is no personal injury involved, drivers can come to the station and complete a "uninvestigated accident report"
For hit and run accidents, contact the Danville Police immediately!
